On May 16-18th 2010 members of We Are Change Chicago (WACC) attended The Heartland Institute’s 4th International Conference on Climate Change: Reconsidering the Science and Economics. The conference consisted of a series of speeches by renowned scientists, economists, politicians etc. from around the world, followed by question and answer sessions, and discussions. Almost everyone in attendance believed anthropogenic global warming to be unethically exaggerated if not a complete criminal fraud. One of the few attendees on the other side of the issue called for open dialogue and debate in the pursuit of science, truth, and informed policy.
WACC also held a street action outside on the first day of the conference to support the proceedings by spreading awareness that there are two sides to this issue as well as by informing people about the cap and trade bill that had recently been introduced. WACC was joined outside by a group that was there to protest the conference. This served to further illustrate the point. There are two sides to this issue. Some of the speakers at the conference maintained that the science is settled. However, Barack Obama and Al Gore have made similar claims. Gore also argues here that those who do not believe in an immanent threat posed by anthropogenic global warming are crackpots akin those who believe the moon landing was faked. As Laurence Gould noted at the conference, Harrison Schmitt, a keynote speaker who has actually been to the moon, is among those that do not believe in an immanent threat posed by anthropogenic global warming. This conference assembled hundreds of “climate change deniers.” Clearly, there is not a consensus.
While this debate is ongoing, policy makers are proceeding as if it isn’t. Many of the speakers emphasized that global warming is being used for political and economic agendas. In particular, it is being used to take people’s freedoms away and centralize power (http://www.freedompub.org/video/climate-change-its-about). Whichever side of the debate over the environmental issue you are on, we must not allow politicians and corporations to use fear to manipulate us into giving up our rights as free human beings. We must not allow national sovereignty to be replaced by a global governing body that will necessarily be unaccountable and unsuitable for handling the needs of the plurality of people. Yet, this is precisely what those who are taking advantage of this crisis, real or fabricated, seek to do.
